The Owl and the Sparrow
Stephan Gauger
2007
The film was semi-realistic and proved to be informative and decent.
The film takes place in Ho Chi Minh City, the largest city in Vietnam. In the suburbs of this
city rests a bamboo production company that manufactures bamboo related products. The main
protagonist, Thuy, a ten-year-old girl, worked at the factory for the majority of her life. Her
uncle, owner of the establishment, was abusive and had little patience with her. One day, she
decides to flee and hide away in the city. In the city she befriends a Zoo keeper who is running
out of business, and must sell an elephant to save the zoo. She also befriends a flight attendant
who is going to depart on her job at the end of the week. Thuy has one goal: to have the Zoo
keeper and the flight attendant to adopt her, and create a family.
The film was mostly accurate to the daily lives of a Vietnamese city. This film could be used to
teach about its culture and values. While the ending didn’t make sense, it wasn’t disappointing.
I recommend this film to someone who is interested in modern Vietnamese culture. I was
watching the movie in a group and we all agreed we enjoyed it.
