What is the book about? (write at least three sentences) This book is about Mustafa Kemal's life from childhood to leader of Turkey. The story details important parts of his life and incorporates the progression of Turkey's history as Kemal's life progresses. This biography highlights Kemal's importance in Turkish history.
What was good about the book? What was good about this book was how informative it was. The book was detailed and gave terrific examples to how Kemal shaped Turkey's history. Also, the book was terrifically ordered by periods in history.
What was challenging about the book? This book was challenging because of its detail. I didn't know much about Turkey before I read this book so if was a bit difficult to follow all the historical and military events and decisions that were described in the book.
Would you recommend the book? Why or why not? I would not recommend this book because I felt it went into too much detail for the research needed for the essay and it was nearly double the amount of pages required to read for the note taking.

FICTION
Book title __Gardens of Water_______
Author__Alan Drew______________
Date published _2008___________
List three adjectives that describe this book
___cultural______ ____religous_____ ____familial________
What is the book about? (write at least three sentences) This book is about two culturally diverse families living in a suburb of Istanbul, Turkey. An earthquake occurs and the families lives are dramatically affected. The book addresses Sinan, a traditional Muslim Kurd, and his family's struggle to stay loyal to their beliefs when Sinan's daughter Ismail falls in love with an American boy whose culture is alien to their traditional Muslim values as well as the values of their society.
What was good about the book? What was good about this book was that it gave terrific examples of traditional Turkish culture and the struggle the country has with introducing modern values to their society. The book also gave rich examples of imagery and the author described the setting beautifully. I felt that this book was a great interpretation of Turkey's culture and it was what was needed for the prompt for the essay.
What was challenging about the book? The challenge I had with this book was that it gave only a single point of view of Turkey. The novel singled out the poor, radically Muslim, Kurdish Turks giving me a limited vision of Turkey. There wasn't anything else challenging about this book because I thought that, overall, it was good to read.
Would you recommend the book? Why or why not? I would recommend this book because it gives a rich interpretation of Turkish values and culture. I think it is perfect for the prompt about culture and provides terrific examples for cultural struggles that Sinan's family has. It full of distinctive examples of Turkish culture.
