The book is about different characters that are living in South Africa. One of the main characters, Jack Burn was wanted in the U.S. and ran away with his family to escape jail time. However the story describes all the new trouble Jack gets into when he arrives in South Aftica and all the dangerous people he meets.
What was good about the book?
I found the book to be very investing and impossible to predict. It kept me wondering what could possibly occur next.
What was challenging about the book?
The book was challenging due to the change in character perspective every chapter.
Would you recommend the book? Why or why not?
I would recommend this book to someone who wanted a shocking story. However, many of the events in the novel were so gruesome and disturbing that I would not recommend this book for a school summer reading novel.

The book tells the story of a cold-blooded killer named Tsotsi, who is also the leader of a South African gang. He harms innocent people until one day when he discovers a baby inside a shoebox. He takes care of the infant and gradually changes into a completely new man.
What was good about the book?
It gave a variety of perspectives- some from Tsotsi and others from victims.The views allow you to see two sides of the story
and understand how and why gang members act the way they do.
What was challenging about the book?
The alternating perspectives were slightly challenging as there was no indication at first as to whose story was being told.
Would you recommend the book? Why or why not?
I would recommend the book because although it was slow at times it was interesting to see the lives of gang members and the reasons behind their behaviors.

Kumalo gets word that his sister, who lives in Johannesburg, is sick and that he must fetch her. Once in Johannesburg, Kumalo reunites with his son and must deal with the consequences of a horrid act his son committed.
What was good about the book?
I enjoyed that this book used a lot of descriptive detail and brought up a controversial topic for its time.
What was challenging about the book?
At times, some passages were a little unclear as to who was saying what.
Would you recommend the book? Why or why not?
I would recommend this book because it is perfect for the topic of Apartheid and I think it really embraces the cultural differences South Africa faced during the time.

As he grew older, he worked harder to reach his goals and eventually proved to all those who underestimated them that dreams can come true.
What was good about the book?
I felt very connected with Oscar because of the personal details he included and the lighthearted humor.
What was challenging about the book?
The book overall was not too challenging, but sometimes it had dull passages.
Would you recommend the book? Why or why not?
Unfortunately, Oscar Pistorius was convicted for murdering his girlfriend earlier in 2013. Therefore, I would probably not recommend this book.
