List three adjectives that describe this film
Intriguing, Comical, Educational
1. What is the film about? (write at least three sentences)
This film is about three young men who have been growing up and want to leave
Pakistan to find a better life. They are all trying to leave Pakistan West and prove their
strength and bravery. The film shows the hardships of trying to get fame, money and
happiness by escaping their reality.
2. What was good about the film?
The film was very educational and shows how hard some people’s lives are around the
world. The film really lightened my eyes to not take things for granted and be thankful.
It makes people think and be appreciative and that is the best part of the film.
3. Would you recommend the film? Why or why not?
I recommend this film for majority of ages, it could get a little intense and not the best
film for young children. I personally recommend it to help people see what the world is
like out there and how not every country has it easy. Pakistan has many hardships that
are hard to understand but seeing this film really shows that perfectly and helps the rest
of the world see what it is like for them.

Film title: Earth
Director: Deepa Mehta
Date released: July 7th, 1999
List three adjectives that describe this film
Powerful, Heartwarming, Sorrowful
What is the film about? (write at least three sentences)
The movie Earth directed by Deepa Mehta takes place in Lahore, Pakistan in 1947, when
Pakistan was still a part of India. The story is narrated by Lenny, an eight-year-old girl
with polio. She is from a wealthy Parsi family, who hopes to remain neutral to the rising
tensions between the religious groups. Her city was made up of a diverse group of people
with different religions, mainly Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, and Parsi. Throughout the movie the
director exposes the fates of these groups and the frustrating religious problems that swept
the city, as a portion of India is given to Pakistan.
What was good about the film?
There were many good aspects to this film. Most noticeably I thought
that the director Deepa Mehta choose a remarkable cast to portray these
characters. According to the New Yorker “Aamir Khan has probably given
the best performance of his life.” The entire cast was likeable, and willing to
come out of their comfort zone, and deliver a truly remarkable film.
Would you recommend the film? Why or why not?
I strongly recommend this film to young adults interested in understanding
the history of these two countries. It was my first Pakistani-Indian movie
that I’ve ever seen, and I was truly impressed. It kept me interested the
entire time. After watching this film, I learned a great deal about their
culture and the development of Pakistan.

Film title: Silent Waters
Director: Sabiha Sumar
Date released: 2003
List three adjectives that describe this film
Interesting thought-provoking superb
What is the film about? (write at least three sentences)
This film is about a small village in the Punjabi province of Pakistan around the
year 1972, and centers around a boy named Saleem and his widowed mother, Ayesha.
Saleem gets caught up in Islamic extremists that come to the village. The extremists
eventually discover that Saleem’s mother was not born a Muslim and use this to
ostracize her, which eventually leads to her committing suicide.
What was good about the film?
It gives insight into the daily life in Pakistan during the 1970s and has an
interesting story line that is different than most American films. The characters are
dynamic and easy to connect with. The setting is also interesting as the characters travel
around the village and to nearby cities.
Would you recommend the film? Why or why not?
I would recommend this film because it was very interesting to see the lives of
these people in a country that has become more important to us in recent years, but
about which we know very little about. It expands the viewer’s world view and does not
try to be overly dramatic, which makes the story believable. Also, it provides a unique
perspective on religious extremism, a topic that has become increasingly important over
the past decade or so.
