Technical Militaristic Lengthy
What is the book about? (write at least three sentences)
This book is about the rise and rule of the North Korean leader Kim Il Sung. From his role in the Korean War to the creation of his cult of personality, this book goes into great depth to describe his life. It also helps to explain why North Korea is how it is today: an isolated dictatorship.
What was good about the book?
The book helped to explain to me why North Korea is like it is today.
What was challenging about the book?
The book was very technical about certain battles and got extremely in depth with some issues that I found uninteresting.
Would you recommend the book? Why or why not?
Unless you are very interested in North Korea and its history, this book would likely seem boring and endless.

FICTION
Book title: Lost Names: Scenes from a Korean Boyhood
Author: Richard E Kim
Date published: March 29, 2011
List three adjectives that describe this book
Captivating Historical Thought-provoking
What is the book about? (write at least three sentences)
This novel is about a young boy growing up during the Japanese occupation of Korea. With a openly rebellious father, his family suffers through great indignities throughout the novel, including having their name changed from a Korean one to a Japanese one. The story explores what it is like to have your culture and homeland taken away from you.
What was good about the book?
The book explores conflicts that anyone in the world can sympathize with, such as the importance of family and being true to one’s nationality and culture.
What was challenging about the book?
The book went into detail about some certain aspects of Korean culture that may be difficult for some to understand; however, this does not take away from the novel as a whole, and I would not describe this book as very challenging.
Would you recommend the book? Why or why not?
Yes I would recommend this book, as Americans are often so focused on studying what occurred in Europe in WWII, this book helps to reveal what happened in parts of the world ignored by Americans, such as the plight of Koreans under the Japanese annexation.
