Film title _____Sopyonje___________________
Director_____Kwon-taek Im____________________
Date released ____1993____________
List three adjectives that describe this film
___musical______________ ____lengthy_____________
______dull_____________
What is the film about? (write at least three sentences)
The film centers around a family of pansori singers struggling to find
employment in South Korea after WWII. Pansori is comparable to American
blues, as it expresses tales of grief, love, and loss. Korean culture underwent a
shift and became modernized and integrated Western and Japanese influences,
and traditional cultural elements like pansori were increasingly ignored.
What was good about the film?
The plot of the film was interesting, but the execution was poor. It was
interesting for me to learn about an country and culture I knew so little about.
Would you recommend the film? Why or why not?
I would not recommend this film because of the nonstop singing that
sounded like screeching and howling to my American ears, which became
unbearable.
