Film: Zaytoun
Director: Eran Riklis
Date Released: 2012
-Powerful
-Moving
-Informative
The film Zaytoun directed by Eran Riklis, is very powerful for the reasons that it is a film
about overcoming fierce rivalries to achieve a common goal. Fahed, the protagonist of the film,
is a Palestinian boy from the country Lebanon, who saves Yoni, an Israeli fighter pilot, so he can
experience life outside of his war torn home. Along the way the two characters face troubles
with themselves and with the militia as they continue their journey back to Israel. As the film
progresses you also see the formation of a tight friendship between two unlikely allies.
This film had many good parts to it, for one being the message the film sends. The
message arising from this film is one that you can't hold a grudge forever and eventually, once
you get to know the other side, they aren't so different from you. Another good part about the
film is the symbols it shows when the two main characters are together on their journey. As the
film progresses, Fahed starts to trust Yoni more and they create a bond that is almost impossible
given their backgrounds, and it is shown when Yoni goes from being handcuffed to practically
attached at the hip to Fahed.
I would recommend this film to anyone who likes comeback movies where there is
always a happy ending because this movie so far has the most powerful ending I have ever seen.
The goal was to make it to Israel safely and it was accomplished. In addition, the first ever
Israeli and Palestinian alliance was forged, breaking ground on what could be a history making
event. Ultimately I chose this movie just as a movie to watch and get some info on Israel for an
essay to write, and I was shocked at how the movie was so informative. This movie would be a
great one to choose because it has a lot of information about the countries involved and while
you're watching it, it might just become one of your favorite movies.
