List three adjectives that describe this book
Interesting Suspenseful Sorrowful
What is the book about? (write at least three sentences)
This book is about a boy named Bruno, who moves to a concentration camp for his father’s job. Bruno sees the inequalities and divisions among society in Germany and Poland (the location of the concentration camp). Bruno meets a Jewish boy, named Shmuel, whom he grows close with. Throughout the course of the book, Bruno gets a better understanding of how Jews were treated, and sympathizes for them.
What was good about the book?
This book had many good aspects about it. For instance, it allows the reader to have a better understanding of how the Jews were treated during the Holocaust. It also allows the reader to have an understanding of how the Nazis felt during the Holocaust, and many other works of literature don’t demonstrate both sides.
What was challenging about the book?
There were many cliffhangers in this novel. There were some parts where the reader is left without answers and must come up with answers on his or her own. It was also hard to read some of the really sad scenes because this book is realistic, and often times the outcome the reader wants doesn’t occur.
Would you recommend the book? Why or why not?
I would recommend this book for several reasons. For instance, it is very suspenseful. I feel as if I could have read this in a day because I wanted to know the ending very badly. Also, the author had many great descriptions of places and characters, causing the reader to connect with the novel. It was a great book.

FICTION
Country: Germany
Your Name: Katie McDowell
Book title: Stones from the River
Author: Ursula Hegi
Date published: 1994
List three adjectives that describe this book
Captivating Telling Influential
What is the book about? (write at least three sentences)
Stones from the River is set in Burgdorf, Germany during, between and after both World Wars and expresses the lives and response of the German people during this critical time. Trudi Montag, the protagonist, is born a Little Person, and forever feels like an outsider from society. However, in this position, she is able to fully see how her community evolves under the Nazi rule. She sees those who passionately follow Hitler, but also those who question his ideologies and pull away from the community, staying away from anything Nazi. Stones from the River is a captivating novel of the true point of view of the German people during the World Wars which is not often heard of.
What was good about the book?
Stones from the River emphasizes that the German people had many different opinions on the Nazi regime and that they, too, found major faults with their leader. The way that the reader really gets to know the people of Burgdorf helps them to see the changes that occur within the town as the Nazi regime take control and to see the progression of the war.
What was challenging about the book?
Stones from the River reads easily and you are soon enthralled but the challenging aspect
comes when you get mad at the characters. Sometimes you cannot understand why someone would do something so drastic or make that decision, but you have to keep on, reminding yourself that they believed what they did was right.
Would you recommend the book? Why or why not?
I would definitely recommend Stones from the River because it presents a whole new point of view of the Nazi regime which is very fascinating to read. I believe that many times we think that all Germans thought that the Nazi regime was amazing and right, but Stones from the River shows that there were those who thought the Nazi regime to be very wrong, but just kept silent in fear of the consequences.
