BIOGRAPHY OR NON-FICTION
Book title _Violeta Parra: The Whim of the Wind_______________________
Author_____Karen Kerchen____________________
Date published __February 1, 2010______________
List three adjectives that describe this book
____engaging_____________ ______interesting___________ _____detailed_______________
What is the book about? (write at least three sentences)
The book is about the life folklore musician Violeta Parra. It follows her through all phases of her life, starting when she was a child and then progressing into her music career and life as a wife and mother.
It is written less like a biography and more like a story of her life, but I found it to be equally informative and easy to read.
What was good about the book?
The book was interesting. It provided details about her career, as well as her active personal life. Violeta was raised to perform, often leaving her parents for weeks at a time as a child to perform with circus acts. I found this way of life to be a little shocking, which made it more enjoyable to read in my opinion.
What was challenging about the book?
The book is on the longer side- 285 pages. Some parts of the novel are more interesting than others so when taking notes, be sure to take notes on pieces that actually matter. I found that I went to write my essay, I had a lot of useless quotations.
Would you recommend the book? Why or why not?
I would recommend this book to someone who is interested in music because I think if you are interested in Violeta's work, the book is more likely to be enjoyable to you. If you are not interested in music, however, I would suggest that you find a biography about someone that did something that interests you personally. The more you are actually interested in what your person did, the easier the biography will be to read.

FICTION
Book title ______The House of Spirits__________________
Author_______Isabel Allende__________________
Date published _____1982___________
List three adjectives that describe this book
__dramatic_______________ ________engaging_________ ________magical____________
What is the book about? (write at least three sentences)
The book takes place in a Latin American city similar to where the author grew up and although a fiction novel, the story often reflects Allende’s own experiences as a child. The novel follows a family through generations and many of these family members have supernatural powers. Because it is so closely linked to Allende's experiences growing up in Chile, it provides great insight into Chilean culture.
What was good about the book?
The novel is quite famous. There is a Sparknotes and I believe it has been taught in many schools. For this reason, there are many resources to help get the most out of reading the novel. Although I don't encourage relying solely on these resources, I think it's helpful to get other people's analysis on the book when writing your essay.
What was challenging about the book?
The book is quite long and there is a lot going on that sometimes may be hard to follow. Luckily, resources like Sparknotes can help you out if there is any confusion, but it takes a long time to read and fully understand. If you don't like reading, don't choose this book.
Would you recommend the book? Why or why not?
I would overall recommend the book because Isabel Allende is great Latin American author and her novels provide great insight into Latin American culture (which is the whole point of the assignment). I would recommend also looking into some of her other novels if you are not interested in this one, because I know she has written quite a lot.
