What is the book about? (Write at least three sentences)
In the novel Esau and Jacob, by Machado de Assis, a wealthy couple from rio de janeiro learn the challenges that come with raising twins. Narrated by the family’s friend, a psychic counselor, the story follows a famous family, involved in the social media a political media, throughout their everyday lives. In the novel Rio de Janeiro is in the midst of a revolution, the main characters, a set of identical twins could not be more opposing in their views, not only of the republic vs. the monarchy but everything they encounter! Contrasting their constant opposition though is their dueling love for a young girl named Flora The story has an entriguing plot of battles between the brothers on multiple issues throughout the book.
What was good about the book?
The plot line was pretty interesting once you got the understanding of it all. The brothers doubled love for the young girl always had ne guessing how she felt and which one would marry her in the end.
What was challenging about the book?
The way the book is written is a little confusing because the perspective is from the all-knowing counselor, however much of the book is also his own personal thoughts about the twins and the family which is interesting but sometimes hard to follow. Also there is a character who is a psychic counselor and I assumed they were the same person but that is never actually stated or proven; for this reason I would advise being a strong reader who likes to invest themselves in a book if you choose this one.
Would you recommend the book? Why or why not?
Due to the narration and format I would suggest it to a good reader, however if your looking for a quicker, easier read this is not the book for you. Machado de Assis has a reputation for leaveing some details of his book to the readers imagination… I found this frustrating since it left me with many questions but if you’re the mystery type with a good imagination, go for it!
